Trivia[edit | edit source]
The PKM (Pulemyot Kalashnikova Modernizirovannyy - Machine gun of Kalashnikov, Modernized) is a 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun designed in the Soviet Union, currently in production in the Russian Federation. The PK machine gun was introduced in the 1960s and replaced the SGM and RP-46 machine guns in Soviet service. It was later upgraded to the PKM model, featuring a different barrel, flash hider, reduced weight and other improvements. It remains in use as a front-line infantry and vehicle-mounted weapon with Russia's armed forces, and has been exported extensively. The design was also used as the basis for the new PKP "Pecheneg" machine gun, intended as a lighter infantry role model.
The design is essentially the Kalashnikov long-stroke piston mechanism turned upside down to fit a top-located belt feed, firing from an open bolt. Using non-disintegrating belts, the PKM can be fed using either 100-round belts, usually carried in a can attached below the receiver, or 200- or 250-round belts from cans mounted onto the PKM's tripod. Unlike most western GPMGs, which utilize push-through belts, the PKM requires the rear of the rimmed 7.62x54mmR cartridge to be first moved backwards, then fed down into the chamber.
Rate of fire of the PK and PKM models is 650-750 RPM.
