Fishing is the process of catching wildlife in the water and is one way to collect food for sustenance. There are two ways to catch a fish in DayZ Standalone: by using any variety of fishing rod, or by using some sort of trap.

Using a Rod

Fishing 2a

In order to use this method, you need to be in possession of a Fishing Rod, but as an alternative you can craft an Improvised Fishing Rod. You'll also need either a Fishing Hook or its crafted alternative in order to attach Earthworms for use as bait. You can dig up worms using a knife. Every time you catch a fish, you lose the bait that was used, so worms will need to be re-added after every catch.

  1. Locate a body of water, either a pond or the sea.
  2. Place the fishing rod of choice in your hands, with bait attached to it, and select the Fish action.
  3. Check the bait on your fishing line periodically until you see a message saying "I sense movement near the bait", then "Something is cautiously examining the bait", then finally in red "A fish has taken the bait!".
  4. Choose the action to Pull Out the fish, and either an actual fish will appear on the ground or you will have missed your chance, meaning you have to start again with the process.

This method can be used to catch Carp in fresh water (ponds) and Mackerel in salt water (sea). There is a small chance of pulling out a pair of Wellies when fishing. When this happens, you will see the message "I have caught... something".

Using a Trap

FishingTrap InUse

Entirely different to the process of using a fishing rod, using a trap to capture fish is a more passive approach to the activity. There are two very different traps available for use by players, but both options are craftable items and cannot be found as loot. One is the Small Fish Trap, constructed from a plastic bottle, used for catching smaller fish (as its name implies). There is also the much larger Fish Net Trap which can be used to catch fish of a more "normal" size. Once you have crafted a trap, you will need to add worms as bait -- a consumable that must be replaced with every catch, the same as using a rod.

  1. Place the trap in salt water (the sea). As of right now, these traps will only work in the sea (not ponds, marshes, or rivers).
  2. Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the trap to do its work.
  3. Check the trap by re-adding it to your inventory. There should be fish inside. If not, return the trap to the water and allow it more time. You may need to re-add worms.

The smaller of the traps is used to catch Sardines, and the larger variety is capable of snaring Mackerel for its user.

Notes

  • As of the current build of 0.61, it is only possible to catch and fillet Carp using a fishing rod, and only from fresh water. The Small Fish Trap is not functional, the larger Fish Net Trap cannot be constructed due to a lack of wire, and fishing rods do not work for catching Mackerel in salt water right now.
