Cooking is the process of turning raw food -- such as meat collected by hunting wild animals or produce grown via horticulture -- into prepared food using a variety of methods, and is one of the main sources of energy for people surviving in the wilderness.

Players are able to utilize a variety of cooking methods, all of which are accomplished with one of two tools: a Cooking Pot or a Long Wooden Stick. Choice of cooking method will depend upon available resources, tools at the player's disposal, and their end goal for using the cooked food.

What to Cook

To cook food with a cooking pot or frying pan, simply ready a cooking method, fill a pot or pan with water and raw food, and add to a fire. If using a long wooden stick, place food on the stick and hold it over a fire. A close eye must be kept on it to be aware of when it changes to fully cooked. While the food is cooking it's inventory background will slowly turn pink, light red and finally a deep red. When a piece of raw food has been fully cooked it will be replaced in the inventory slot with its darker, cooked equivalent, with boiled food slightly lighter in color than food cooked without water. Due to the heat, food can go from cooked to burnt very quickly. While burnt food (or even raw meat) is edible, its quality is questionable and it is likely to cause food poisoning.

How to Cook

Fireplace + Long Wooden Stick

CookingWithAStick 1
  • Obtain a long wooden stick from a tree using a knife.
  • Craft a basic fireplace. Place it on the ground.
  • After creating the basic fireplace, you'll need to add fuel in the form of wooden sticks or firewood. Group the fuel to the existing stack in the fireplace. Any sticks or wood added to the cargo area will simply be destroyed, adding nothing to the life or size of the fire. You can add up to 5x wooden sticks and 3x firewood at a time as a single stack, which will burn one piece at a time until they are all consumed. Grouping wooden sticks or firewood to their stacks as they burn away extends the life of the fire.
  • Ignite the fire by holding a matchbox or a hand drill kit and choosing "Ignite" with your mouse wheel.
  • In your inventory, click and drag the food you want to cook onto the stick to attach it to the end. You can only cook one piece at a time.
  • Place the stick in your hands and face the fireplace. You will be given an option to "Pose the stick in front of the fire".
  • Wait for the food to cook, then remove it or switch it for raw food. If you move, you will stop cooking and must pose the stick again.

Fireplace + Cooking Pot or Frying Pan

CookingIndoors 1
FireplaceTypes
  • Craft a basic fireplace. Place it on the ground.
  • The basic fireplace will need to be upgraded in some way to hold a pot or pan:
    • Crafted into a stone oven by attaching 8x stones (large).
    • Combined with a cooking tripod.
    • Added to an indoor fireplace or stove with a grill rack.
  • Fill the pot or pan with water and food, then add it as an attachment.
  • Add fuel and ignite as above.
  • Wait for the food to cook, then remove it or switch it for raw food.

Portable Gas Stove + Cooking Pot or Frying Pan

  • Combine a portable gas stove with a gas canister.
  • Fill the pot or pan with water and food, then add it as an attachment.
  • Ignite the gas stove by choosing "Turn On" with your mouse wheel.
  • Wait for the food to cook, then remove it or switch it for raw food.
  • When finished turn off the gas stove. It can be picked up and reused.

Barrel with Holes + Cooking Pot or Frying Pan

  • Open the lid of the barrel.
  • Do not craft a fireplace. Instead, add wooden sticks and a rag, a piece of paper, a piece of bark, or a bandage as attachments.
  • Add fuel and ignite as above.
  • Close the lid of the barrel.
  • Fill the pot or pan with water and food, then add it as an attachment.
  • Wait for the food to cook, then remove it or switch it for raw food.

Note: Anything inside the barrel (cargo) will be ruined.

Note: The pan doesn't currently need Water as of .60

Trivia

  • As of 0.61, the Frying Pan is not able to be used in cooking. It cannot be filled with water, and cooking with it while empty burns the food being cooked (which causes food poisoning).
