Note: this page covers the Standalone version of DayZ; for information on the Mod, see Mod:Backpack.
Backpacks are equippable items that can be used to expand the survivor's carrying capacity. Survivors with backpack can carry more supplies and weapons, thus greatly improving chances of survival. Few backpacks can be crafted, but most have to be looted across Chernarus.
When equipped a backpack provide extra inventory slots in addition to the player's main inventory and Clothing slots. There are several types of Backpack of varying size, the smaller of these have 8 Slots and the largest have 35 Slots. Large backpacks are necessary to carry extra primary weapon or other large sized items. As with other inventory slot, backpack slot will hold stacks of items (e.g. 40 bullets), but by Backpacks themselves do not stack i.e. you can't wear more than one backpack in any given time.
Backpacks also have damage states and due to this property, it and all items inside may also be damaged. Damage states however, do not affect the container's ability to store items.
The Ghillie Suits, including the Ghillie Bushrag and Ghillie Top are technically backpacks with no inventory capacity. They are instead listed under clothing to avoid confusion.
