The 5.56 Round is based on the real world [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.56%C3%9745mm_NATO 5.56×45mm NATO] rounds. It was developed for the American M16 assault rifle during the Vietnam war in the 1950s, derived from the .223 Remington rifle round. The 5.56x45mm round also replaced the 7.62x51mm round's role as NATO's standard rifle cartridge. Today it is the standard cartridge for militaries across all NATO countries, and many non-NATO countries.
