Note: this page covers the Standalone version of DayZ; for information on the Mod, see Mod:Temperature. A players body temperature is one of the character stats in DayZ Standalone. It is affected by the Weather, wearing warm Clothes, character excursion, and heat sources such as fireplace; which in-turn determines how easy it is to get Infections.

Overview

Clothing is the main factor in determining your body temperature. Warm clothing will get you by through cold winters nights and their lack of will allow you to sprint in warm sunny weather. Every clothing item you wear offers a degree of warmth. Smaller, lighter and thinner items have a relatively low 'heat value'. Larger, thicker and heavier clothing items have a higher 'heat value'. Having several items equipped at the same time provides a cumulative bonus.

The Weather is a factor in how warm or cold you are. Outside temperatures will vary based on the time of year and time of day and further affected by your altitude, if its windy and or the presence of rain. Just it being rainy makes it colder, whether you're wet or not, however if you are wet, the degree of warmth your clothing gives you is drastically reduced. You can also use the environment to quickly get warmer\cooler by getting in proximity to heat a source, such as a fireplace or cool off by taking a swim in pond or the sea.

Your breath will gauge if it is cold outside, if you can see your breath, get some pants on! You can also tell if your temperature is increasing/decreasing by checking your character status message in the chat-area of the screen. "It's chilly out there" means your temperature is currently decreasing. "I am sweating" means your temperature is currently increasing; and severe hyperthermia/hypothermia status will be indicated in the inventory screen. For precise measurement of your body temperature use a Medical Thermometer.

Loss of body heat from exposure to cold or water, will result in hypothermia. Overheating will result in hyperthermia, causing you to dehydrate due to excessive sweating. Both conditions can be fatal.

Mechanics

Ambient temperature is a key factor influencing a character's body temperature. Base ambient temperatures differ based upon the server time of year. This base temperature is then modified by things like Altitude, wind and presence of rain. This is further modified by Character Clothing heat sources such as fireplace.

  • Clothing – Every clothing item you wear has a 'heat value' and they are all combined to give you a total 'heat value' for your character.
  • Sun – Clear and sunny days mean higher temperatures.
  • Rain – Rain means lower temperature, and might lead to wet clothes, which will drastically affect Clothing 'heat value'.
  • Altitude/Wind – Higher altitudes and Windy conditions mean lower temperatures.

All these factors combined will determine the ambient temperature. Once the ambient temperature is calculated, your body temperature will start to slowly increase or decrease until it reaches that value.

You increase your body temperature by
  • Sit beside a Fireplace (very fast)
  • Wear extra clothing items and or Make sure your clothing items are dry.
  • Expose yourself to sunshine or Remaining inside buildings. (slow - moderate based on time of day\night)
  • Descend to lower altitudes
  • Moving (very slow, faster movement speed will neutralize loss)
  • Using a Heatpack
Your body temperature will decrease when
  • Remove clothing items.
  • Expose yourself to rain. Take a dip in the sea, a lake or a pond - This makes your clothing items 'wet' or 'soaked' (fast)
  • You are outdoors at night (slow)
  • You are outdoors in a windy environment (slow)
