The Standing Stones were a historical landmark close by to Altar.
General
The origins of this formation of upright rocks is unknown. They are near by to a location (a mountain) known as Altar, and may perhaps have religious or cultural significance of some sort. Each of the stones corresponds to a primary (N, S, E, W) or secondary direction (NE, SE, NW, SW), making the whole thing an oversized compass.
