The thrown smoke grenade patterns its arc off of the thrown fragmentation grenade and as well can be difficult to predict its travel without practice.
The primary usage of a smoke grenade is to distract zombies while sneaking about, much the same as a whiskey bottle or empty soda can, but it can also distract zombies who are chasing a player and be used as a means of escape or thinning out the pack that is in pursuit.
Alternatively while engaged in combat with a player the smoke grenade can be used as a visual distraction or screening technique to allow either movement under cover or to misdirect a player who has you or a squad-mate pinned down by providing something else for them to look at, designate, and consider its threat to them.
Further the smoke grenade can be used to signal locations to squad-mates by either smoking your position or enemy positions. Also it can be used as a battlefield marker to give directions based on its position to ease communication or confusion about positions and targets.
