How to Hunt
Hunting may be key to survival if you are staying away from the populated areas as it is one of the only sources of food, except for Barns. If you're not sure how to do it, then stick to this guide for detailed information.

[edit] Required items
- Hunting Knife
- Box of Matches or lit Oil Barrel
- Hatchet or a Wood Pile
- A weapon to kill the animal with (a hatchet works as well)
[edit] Obtaining the Raw Meat
Obviously the first thing that you will need to obtain is some Raw Meat.
This can be in varied quantities on the bodies of livestock and other animals.
Below is a listing of some known drops from animals:
| Animal | Amount of raw meat |
|---|---|
| Rabbit | 1 meat |
| Chicken | 1 meat |
| Goat | 3 meat |
| Boar | 4 meat |
| Sheep | 5 meat |
| Cow | 8 meat |
Once you have found an animal, you will need to kill it. Most animals are found wandering fields secluded from zombies so you should be safe to take them out with a clean shot to the head.
A gun or a melee weapon can be used to kill the animal.
Once the animal is dead, approach the carcass and select the option 'Gut Animal'. After the animation has finished some game text will appear stating which animal you gutted and the quantity of meat it had. You can then loot the animal like a normal body to obtain the Raw Meat.
There is currently a bug in the game so if an animal is gutted by two or more players simultaneously, it will double (or more, if more than two players) the amount of meat collected. See Known Bugs.
[edit] Creating a Fire
You need a Box of Matches and a Wood Pile to start a fire.
Wood piles can be obtained by using a Hatchet when in a forest, standing next to a tree. The process isn't the best, and you have to be in quite a densely wooded area for it to work. Alternatively wood piles can be found as loot inside barns and rural buildings.
Once you have the wood pile, you can right click your matchbox and select the option 'Create fireplace'. After a short animation a small unlit fireplace will be placed on the ground beneath you. Using your mouse wheel you must select 'Light fire' to actually get it going. It can be extinguished by rain or by using the mousewheel to select 'Put out fire'.
[edit] Using an Oil Barrel
Alternately, if you do not have a Box of Matches, you can use an Oil Barrel to cook Raw Meat instead. Lighting an Oil Barrel on fire does not require a Box of Matches. Select "Put on Fire" in the contextual menu to light the Oil Barrel. Follow the same cooking directions as below.
[edit] Cooking the Meat
Once you have a fire going, you must place the raw meat into your active inventory. Meat in your bag will not be cooked. Once it is in your inventory, use your mousewheel on the fire to select 'Cook meat'. This will initiate a small animation at the end of which all raw meat in your inventory will be cooked. You will have to repeat this if you have more in your bag.
Once you are done cooking, it is reccomended that you put out your fire as it could attract Zombies and other Survivors.
