"The M4 carbine is a family of firearms that was derived from earlier carbine versions of the M16 rifle, which was in turn derived from the original AR-15 rifle that Eugene Stoner designed and ArmaLite made. the M4 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle, with 80% part commonality."
— In-game description

The M4A1 is a common military weapon which can be found in military installations and buildings throughout Chernarus.

The M4A1 is chambered for the 5.56x45mm cartridge.

With the default stock and handguard, the M4A1 is extremely inaccurate. For comparison, it has 4 times the dispersion of the mod's M1014 shotgun.

The M4A1 carbine is part of the family of firearms that was derived from earlier carbine versions of the M16 rifle, which was in turn derived from the original AR-15 rifle that Eugene Stoner designed and ArmaLite made.

The M4A1 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle, with 80% parts commonality.

[edit] Strategy

The M4A1, is designed almost-completely for close-quarters combat. The M4A1's accuracy impedes it beyond medium range, even when the weapon is in pristine condition. Attachments such as the ACOG 4x Sight as well as the Magpul Stocks and Magpul Handguards will significantly help increase the rifle's effective distance, but it will still lag behind other rifles like the Mosin 9130.

However, even with a Magpul-upgraded M4A1 and attached with a ACOG 4x sight (see attachments for further information), the M4A1 can still remain inaccurate at even medium range (250-300m). It is recommended to switch the rifle to Semi-Automatic ("T" Key) at longer range, to reduce recoil.

It is important to learn how the rifle shoots and works in order to maintain a reasonable range with the gun, as well as the use of flanking, ambushing, and/or suppression. It is important to take advantage of the rifle's close-ranged effectiveness, automatic fire coupled with compact size creates a perfect close-quarters weapon.

  • Note: users have reported differences in accuracy which may stem from the gun's condition. Other factors that come into play are health, control of breath (resting/prone position and using right-click to stabilize), condition of all parts (including mags/ammo). There does not appear to be any "wind" factor for shots. Many users have been able to repeatedly make headshots on targets > 250m out using ACOG optics, bipod deployed, fully healthy in a prone position.

[edit] Attachments

The M4A1 has many attachments with various purposes, these parts may commonly be found in military installations and buildings.

[edit] Buttstocks

[edit] M4 Buttstock OE

OE Buttstock3.png

A standard buttstock that comes as a default with the M4A1 carbine.
Made of metal with a rubber shoulder guard.

[edit] M4 Buttstock CQB

CQB Buttstock3.png

A lighter buttstock for more efficient CQB.
Has slightly increased dispersion, but makes the weapon easier to handle.

[edit] M4 Buttstock MP

Magpul Buttstock3.png

A MAGPUL MOE buttstock, available in black polymer.

[edit] Handguards and rails

[edit] M4 Handguard Plastic

Plastic Handguard3.png

A basic M4 plastic handguard.

[edit] M4 Handguard RIS

RIS Handguard3.png

An M4A1 handguard that provides a base for the rail based attachment system.
It provides 4 Picatinny rails, one each in the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock-positions for mounting lights, lasers, bipods, grips and optics.
Enables use of Weapon Flashlight when equipped.

[edit] M4 Handguard MP

Magpull Handguard3.pngMagpull Handguard Green.png

A MAGPUL handguard for the M4, comes in black and olive drab color variants.

[edit] Sights and Optics

[edit] M4 Carryhandle Optics

Handle Optics3.png

A basic carry handle with integrated, adjustable iron sights that comes mounted onto every M4A1.

[edit] BUIS

BUIS Optics3.png

Back-up Iron Sights. A basic iron sight for the M4, similar to the carry handle but of a smaller size.
Takes one inventory spot compared to the carry handle sight.

[edit] T3N RDS Optics

T3N RDS Optics.pngRDS Optics Zoomed2.png

Sight for firearms, featuring an illuminated red dot as a reticle.

[edit] M68 CompM2 Optics

M68 CompM2 Optics.pngM68 Comp2 Optics View1.png

The M68 CompM2 Optic is a battery powered non-magnifying red dot type of reflex sight for the M4A1.

[edit] ACOG Optics

Acog Optics3.pngAcog Optics Zoomed.png

Trijicon Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight with 4x magnification level.
Attachable to any weapon with a standardized rail system. Factory default zeroed to 100m and manually adjustable to 700m.

Warning: It is buggy at the moment, magnification level is only 1.65x. (01/06/2014)

[edit] Illumination

[edit] Weapon Flashlight

Weapon Flashlight3.png

A universal flashlight attachable to most weapons to provide tactical advantage.
Requires an RIS for attachment.

[edit] Suppressors

[edit] Suppressor 556

An attachment for the barrel of a firearm which significantly reduces the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon.
This variant is designed specifically for 5.56mm caliber and uses a quick detach system for quickly mounting/dismounting onto the flash hider of the host rifle.
NOTE: Suppressor will not work optimally without SD Low Velocity ammunition. Regular 5.56mm ammo will still report a sonic boom with each shot.

[edit] Bipods

[edit] ATLAS Bipod

ATLAS Bipod3.png

This bipod provides solid support for longer range engagements, will allow for greater weapon accuracy when deployed and user is at a prone stance.
It has to be deployed manually by right-clicking in inventory.

[edit] Bayonets

A bayonet can be found and attached to the underside of the M4A1, on the opposite side of the barrel under the front sight.
It can be used to open cans.
