The M4 carbine is a family of firearms that was derived from earlier carbine versions of the M16 rifle, which was in turn derived from the original AR-15 rifle that Eugene Stoner designed and ArmaLite made. the M4 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle, with 80% part commonality. — In-game description

The M4A1 is an uncommon weapon which can be found at Helicopter Crash Sites and General Military throughout Chernarus. It is chambered for the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

The M4A1 is designed almost completely for close-quarters combat. The M4A1's inaccuracy impedes it beyond medium range, even when the weapon is in pristine condition. Attachments such as the ACOG 4x Sight as well as the Magpul Stocks and Magpul Handguards will significantly help increase the rifle's effective distance but it will still lag behind other rifles like the Mosin 9130.

Even with a Magpul-upgraded M4A1 with an ACOG 4x sight (see attachments for further information), the M4A1 is still inaccurate at even medium range (250-300m). It is recommended to switch the rifle to Semi-Automatic ("T" Key) to reduce recoil at long range. It is important to learn how the rifle shoots and works in order to maintain a reasonable range with the gun, as well as the use of flanking, ambushing, and/or suppression. It is tactically sound to take advantage of the rifle's close-range effectiveness; automatic fire coupled with compact size creates an excellent close-quarters weapon.

Note: Users have reported differences in accuracy which may stem from the gun's condition. Other factors that come into play are health, control of breath (resting/prone position and using right-click to stabilize), condition of all parts (including mags/ammo). There does not appear to be any "wind" factor for shots. Many users have been able to repeatedly make headshots on targets > 250m out using ACOG optics with the bipod deployed, fully healthy in a prone position.

Note: When the ATLAS Bipod is deployed and while the player is prone, the M4 has almost no recoil besides a slight pull to the right.
