The Bear is an animal in DayZ. The Bear was added in the 1.06 update and seems to spawn more frequently than wolves. Bears are considered difficult to kill, being considerably harder to take down compared to wolves.
Bears take considerably more bullets than a wolf or infected, as they have ~4x the amount of health (at ~402HP). So it is wise to avoid combat when you don't have much health or bullets, as 1 hit from a Bear will give you 1-4x bleed and can knock you out at the same time.
Bears also have a tendency to hit the player once and then run away. This only happens when you get to close and the bear acts in self-defense. If being fired upon, they will continue hitting the survivor until he's dead.
Bears are neutral unless fired at, or a survivor gets too close near it. If there are more than 1 Bear and you trigger 1, just like the infected they will all get aggro'd on the survivor. The same goes for shooting when they are near, they will aggro on the survivor when they are close by.
The Bear is also much faster than the survivor can run, clocking in at around 40km/h (~25mph). This means when you aggro a Bear, running away is futile. Unless you can jump in the water, as Bears can't swim. They can also easily stay in proximity when you're driving a car and not lose aggro.
Bears will attack big game wildlife when they are not hunting a survivor, however will not attack zombies, other predators or small ambient wildlife.

NOTE: This column only accounts for headshots. All values are the required shots you need up to 100m. When it comes to body shots the list might be slightly inaccurate as the bear tanks more damage if shot in the torso or neck rather than its back and limbs but should give a good idea of how many bullets an average person needs to take it down
